What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear ‘shopping’? Cash magically disappearing from your wallet, your beloved Visa card squealing for mercy, or plenty of flashes as she takes selfies in the dressing room? These are some of the more common associations of this notorious concept, especially if there’s a picky young woman who has to see and try all the latest fashion trends out.
Yes, your teenage daughter does need a responsible adult by her side every time she decides to visit the mall. If not, she’ll come home with a bunch of shopping bags filled with the latest cheap styles! So, how are you to survive a shopping spree with a teenager, especially a teenage girl who’s actually your daughter? Save yourself the hassle and read these easy tips, you have enough on your hands as it is.
Don’t Lecture Her Regarding Modesty and Appropriate Designs
Young girls seem to have a wild passion for fashion – it’s been that way for centuries. The odds that a fabulous U-turn are slim to none. Your teen daughter probably knows much more about trendy clothes and shoes than you can ever dream of. You’re old fashioned – remember!
She can deliver an entire recital on faded jeans, emo prints, and colors that are in this season. She probably can spell all the popular designers, red carpet models, and big-time fashion no-no’s that you can’t even pronounce. It’s ok to let her make her own fashion decisions. That is unless it involves a top with way too much cleavage or a belt sized skirt which are “the only ensemble pieces she can wear to be popular at school.”
Don’t try to stick your fashion sense on her. A compromise here and there should suffice.
Remember that you were once young too. Do you recall doing just the opposite of what your parents wanted?
Arm Yourself with a Butt-Load of Patience
There just is no way around it. You need the patience of a saint to stick around for as long as it takes for her to make up her mind figuring out outfits! Oh, the decisions on what to wear at the prom, her best friend’s birthday party, or trip to the beach next summer.
The same goes for shopping online. Unless she’s already done her homework, simply purchasing some tasteful tankini swimwear online won’t be a five second process. Even if she has previously chosen her favorite items (that doesn’t shock the heck out of you), you want to compare the pricing on a few websites. Be sure to double-check the tiny terms of service for additional fees for that included tankini set, tartan skirt or oversized jumper.
Set Up a Shopping Budget and Stick To It
Teen girls these days tend to have a special bond with expensive name brand clothing with price tags that can knock you off your feet. So it’s up to you to set a budget before you leave home and help her understand that adults use budgets! Don’t expect her to agree with you right off, though.
Teens think they will get their way by raging on about the generation gaps, financial injustice, and how they need things to be happy.
But over time, they’ll get over it. Then you won’t have to argue much over whether a $450 pair of worn-out jeans is a responsible way to spend your money, just because her BFF has the same pair.
So does this entice you to prepare for your next round of shopping with your teen girl? All it takes is you both compromising on looks and setting a firm budget for the both of you to be happy.
Having a 13 year old, this post really hits home! All of your tips are right on!

Since I have boys I will not have to experience this particular problem. However, the budgeting tip definitely is something I need to stick to when shopping at any time. I love to shop and my oldest son is already taking advantage of that, reminding me weekly of how he needs new clothes and shoes for school.

These are great tips. My daughter is only three but I feel like I have to have both a budget and patience every time I go shopping with her. I’m afraid it’s only going to get worse as she approaches her teenage years.

I can definitely understand the need for patience, seeing as I expect it from my husband when I need to go shopping. A budget is definitely important. I have to say, I have to respectfully disagree with the first point however. In our home, modesty is very important and when we go clothes shopping, we won’t be looking for the newest fashions, I will be teaching my daughters what they can buy and still remain modest.
